There are many must-haves when running an IT environment. Most here are free or inexpensive and many assist greatly in automated scripts.
SCRIPTING-COMMAND LINE
WGET : A command line tool that retrieves web links/sites. This is used by NoPress to make a basic mirror of the local website.
FART : It may sound a bit rude but FART stands for Find And Replace Text. An easy to automate command line tool that makes simple edits to text files or entire directories of text files. This is used by NoPress to edit files in your mirrored site prior to uploading into production.
NcFTP : A small collection of great command line FTP tools. Much easier than building full FTP scripts. This is used by NoPress to upload your entire site mirror into production via FTP.
WinSCP – SFTP, SCP S3, and FTP command line client. Also includes GUI and .NET interface for complex operations.
7-ZIP – Free file archiver for ZIP, GZIP, GZIP2, WIM, TAR, RAR files.
DelProf2 – Free user profile deletion tool. Gets rid of inactive or old user profiles. Especially helpful in a Citrix/Terminal Server/VDI environment.
REMOTE ACCESS
mRemoteNG – More than just a great (free) way to organize all of your RDP connections. mRemoteNG also allows a nice tree-based organizer and tabbed window for VNC, HTTP(S), SSH, Telnet and ICA connections.
PuTTY – Free SSH and Telnet client.
SYSTEM / FILE MANAGEMENT
WizTree – So far, the best and fastest free disk space management tool. Find out where space is being wasted on your hard drives.
7-ZIP – Free file archiver for ZIP, GZIP, GZIP2, WIM, TAR, RAR files.
WinMerge – Free file/folder comparison and merging tool.
DelProf2 – Free user profile deletion tool. Gets rid of inactive or old user profiles. Especially helpful in a Citrix/Terminal Server/VDI environment.
